Major donor and individual giving programs depend on a core commitment to relationship over transaction. Donors may not want to be your best friend, but neither do they want to be your ATM machine. Finding the balance of a mutually supportive and respectful relationship underlies the most effective, equitable, sustainable individual giving programs.
Whose job is that? Who makes sure that the land trust builds and sustains relationships with people who want to support conservation? That’s everybody’s job.
Fundraising doesn’t succeed just because fundraisers ask for money. Fundraising succeeds when every member of the land trust team • from board member to stewardship manager to receptionist • sees and embraces their part of building a sustainable, resilient financial future. Every person in the land trust has a role in success. That is as true with fundraising as it is with conservation projects.
